A very dedicated group of women who live in the neighbourhood known as the "Anexo a la Villa 23 de Julio" in the city of Leon run this great Afterschool Program for local kids. The aim is to ensure that primary school children get help with their homework and excel at school. Beyond that, the program provides recreational activities on both weekdays and weekends. The Afterschool Program is a vibrant part of this community. They are the principal users of the local community hall. The women have furthermore contributed to the greening of two local parks and the creation of a sports field. Casa Canadiense and many Canadians haves contributed to this project in the following ways:
- 2008/2009 - $8,000 (over two years) contribution from the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA) for general program expenses. This is only the most recent financial support provided by OECTA, for many years now, OECTA has been very generous is providing on going support to this worthy project.
- February 2008 - With the visit of some York University students (Toronto, ON Canada), the community centre got a new roof, keeping the Afterschool Program participants and materials dry from the heavy rains.
- March 2007 - Students from St. Edmund Campion Catholic Secondary School (Brampton, ON Canada) brought money for books, materials and a general sprucing-up of the room used by the Afterschool Program. The Program acquired new tables, a new coat of paint as well as a well-stocked reading and games corner. A donation of 3 computers was also put to good use - the Afterschool Program began to also give basic computer literacy classes to the participants.
- January 2005 - Students from Robert F. Hall Catholic Secondary School (Caledon, ON Canada) worked alongside the community to clear the area around the community hall for a multi-purpose sports field. Already sporting a baseball diamond, goal posts were installed for a soccer field and a cement pad was poured and outfitted for both basketball and volleyball. It was a dirty job, but now, day in and day out, the field is put to good use by all members of the community.
- January 2003 - Students from St. Augustine Catholic Secondary School (Brampton, ON Canada) spent a week with the community and helped build a playground for local kids. They also helped the community do a much needed clean-up of the local wooded area that had been partially destroyed during Hurrican Mitch in 1998.
