Students and teachers from St Augustine's Catholic Secondary School (Brampton, ON Canada) teamed up with the Finca Magdalena and the Balgue citizens committee to expand the town's tiny community hall.

The Finca Magdalena is a well known backpackers destination in Nicaragua. It is a cooperative run by local campesinos who were given the land under the Sandinista government in the 1980s. The Finca Magdalena is one of the few cooperatives still intact from that period. It has survived through the production of organic coffee (and its subsequent sale through the fair trade market) and eco-tourism.

Many of the farm's members also sit on the village's citizens committee. They are always looking at ways to benefit their community as a whole, and not just their own interests on the farm.
