Region: Students and teachers from Robert F Hall Catholic Secondary School (East Caledon, ON Canada) worked hard to help the Cooperativa Agua y Tierra stabilize the banks of their local swimming hole. The site, located on the Cooperative's lands, attracts many visitors from all over Southern Nicaragua, but with so many people, the water was usually soon muddied and the banks destroyed. The cooperative was unable to benefit economically from the site. However, with improvements to the swimming hole completed in early 2007, the Cooperative began charging a modest entrance fee. At first surprised, local visitors were soon happy to pay when they saw the work that had been done. During Easter Week alone (time to go to the beach in Nicaragua), the Cooperative collected over CAD$500 in entrance fees. The Cooperative Agua y Tierra exists to improve the livelihoods of its members. The Cooperative is located at the base of Mombach volcano between the cities of Granada and Nandaime. Few services and income generating opportunities exist for these families. They have turned to community-based eco-tourism given the beauty of the location. The Cooperative also works hard to promote the education and training of local youth in order to ensure a better future for the community. |
