Region: This Casa Project Fund project was also with the Las Tias Association of Leon. The project aimed to build skills among the parents of the children participating in Las Tias programming as well as to provide some skills training to the older youth at the centre for adolescents. Parents and youth alike were given the opportunity to participate in workshops teaching baking, pinata-making, leather working and hairdressing. Pastries and baking turned out to be the most popular workshop among the adults, while the adolescents were the predominant group in the leather working workshop. Facilitators were paid to teach lead a first round of workshops and then participants repeated those workshops for others allowing more people to participate in the long run. Youth at the centre continue to make leather souvenirs for sale. They are hoping to acquire a leather-working machine (similar to a heavy duty sewing machine) to expand the work they are able to do. |
