Region: The Casa Project Fund supported a pilot project with the Las Tias Association (The Aunties) in the city of Leon on sexual abuse prevention. Between July 2005 and the Fall of 2007, Las Tias took their workshop to over 1,000 students in 9 public schools in the city of Leon. Just under 300 parents, 120 parents and 170 people from nearby neighbourhoods participated in parallel workshops. The workshops discussed sexual abuse, Nicaraguan law and empowered young people to not turn a blind eye when confronted with suspicions of sexual abuse. Las Tias took several accusations to the competent authorities as a result of the workshops and the relationships of trust that they established with the participants. Las Tias is a well-recognized local NGO operating in the city of Leon with a long history of working on behalf of the neediest of the city's children. They run two centres in the city of Leon - one for children and another for adolescents - where they provide skills training, educational support, meals and other services. |
