Region: In April 2007, a group of students from Queens University (Kingston, ON Canada), in conjunction with Companeros and Casa Canadiense helped 20 households in Barrio Augusto Cesar Sandino in Managua get connected to the municipal sewer system. This project was the expansion of the preschool improvement project that was completed the month before at the Esmeralda Palacios Preschool in the same barrio. With the leadership of four residents in their 60s (in Nicaragua it is very uncommon to work with people of that age, because there aren't many!), all of the families on the street agreed to work together to install a sewer pipe on their street. Families contributed man power and some money so that the project could come to completion. Together, they were able to overcome the bureaucratic obstacles and obtain the necessary permits from the municipality and the national water and sewer company. The project improved they hygiene at the local community preschool. It now has a functioning toilet and the old latrine was filled in. |
